The Rise- A Collection of South Asian Hip Hop

The Rise- A Collection of South Asian Hip Hop

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Mandee Banga from Rukus Avenue Radio’s show, Desi Soul Jams who mentioned that the station brought together multiple different artists in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI). Rukus Avenue Radio has already been doing some amazing things for our community, and y’all know I’m all about spreading love and culture, so what better way to get back to the blog than a piece on The Rise- A Collection of South Asian Hip Hop.

The Rise has a long list of some of the most well known and versatile names in the South Asian Hip Hop space all over the world such as Anik Khan (New York), Bohemia (India), Raxstar (UK), and DJ Upsidedown (Los Angeles) — alongside Adi, RMS, Raool, Pav, Shivxm, Gopal, Hasham, Feni Fina, D-Boy, Sef, Des-C, Dee MC, Kaly Slay, Naman, Kahani, Navamber, YSF, Rajan, Dada Flow, LackHoney, DopeAmin, Sukh Raj, Happy Singh, ACHARYA, Vichaar, Dhanji, Siyaahi, Wild Wild Women, Vy, Ahmer, RAK, SOS, Prxphecy and more. So, of course I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share my thoughts with you. I’ve always found it’s difficult to hear music that truly represents us as South Asians who are mostly born and brought up in countries other than our homeland. I know most of us have probably felt it time and again, too desi for our American friends and too American for our desi friends, so it was refreshing to listen to and be able to enjoy tracks that bring together both modern beats that we listen to in mainstream music and that desi flare we all appreciate in South Asian music.

As I got to listen to this compilation I don’t think there’s one song I didn’t truly enjoy listening to. From the modern, catchy beats to the unique lyrics with some desi words in the mix, I felt there was a song for everyone to enjoy, and from my experience that’s a balance that’s pretty difficult to find in the music world. There are very few platforms that allow so many artists to combine their talents to create something truly multicultural, that would resonate with South Asians and non-South Asians alike without having these talented artists cut back or sugarcoat their true artistic styles.

Growth in the South Asian Hip Hop scene is something us as music lovers have been encouraging for the longest time and I personally couldn’t be happier about it’s growth and the positive impact it’s given our community. Paving the way for future generations is something South Asian communities have strived for for the longest time and to see that coming to light in the music scene as well shows us how far we have come. Highly suggest downloading The Rise and sharing with other music lovers out there!

The Rise is now available on Spotify, Apple Music and all streaming platforms and don’t forget to follow Rukus Avenue Radio on Instagram!
